Melancholia 2011
I've seen two films in the last couple of days that I thoroughly recommend. The first is Melancholia which I saw at the Curzon in wimbledon. The film has a beautiful start with lots of slow motion and heavily emotional music and carries on in a similar manner with twists and odd eerie bits here and there. I can't really comment on the general theme of the film without spoiling it but it's not something to watch just before bed. It's doesn't touch on disturbing like Antichrist does but is still quite affecting. Quite intense and beautifully shot,it's definitely quite a realistic and moving film.
Marwencol 2010
The other film I recommend is Marwencol. I've just finished watching this and it was amazing. It's a documentary film about a man who was beaten up so severely he suffered from brain damage. He then creates a world called Marwencol which he fills with dolls that act out different scenarios loosely based on his life. He has a doll for every person he knows in real life, including himself which he calls his alter ego. He then photographs the dolls and it becomes this real story. The photographs are amazing. Definitely worth seeing as I found the whole thing very moving and very much empathized with Mark Hogancamp.
